JOB DESCRIPTIONS
To allow you to complete the form honestly, we have outlined the job descriptions for orchard picking.
Cherry Work – Picking
Pickers will require a high degree of physical fitness and general good health. The work is not particularly heavy but does require continuous physical activity for a minimum of eight hours per day, much in strong sunlight.
Pickers are required to carry their orchard picking buckets from tree to tree during the day. The cherry is picked by firmly grasping the stalk near the fruit bud, between your thumb and forefinger and bending the stalk clear of the fruit bud, without removing the fruit bud.
The cherry is then placed carefully into your picking basket, which you carry against yourself on a harness that fits over your shoulders and back. When your picking basket is full unclip the container from your harness and place the container well into the shade. You then clip an empty basket onto the harness and begin picking again.
The system requires that you carry up to six kilos with you as you continue to pick cherries. The work requires stretching, reaching, bending and lifting throughout the day.
You will be paid on the amount you pick. The more you pick the higher the return you will receive for the total you pick. Your fitness level will determine your ability to meet the necessary criteria.
